Your List of Recommended Authors and Favorite Reads

Hi Everyone-
As promised, here's a list of all your recommended reads and favorite authors that we discussed over the last couple of weeks. At the end are some of your favorite reads from 2009. This blog will stay up for months, so when you run of out of books to read, you can come back and get more recommendations.
Big hugs and a very special thank you to Jackie P. who worked so hard to put this list together for us.
And again, thank you all for the support you've given me this year. Because of wonderful readers like you, there are six more Last Chance Rescue books headed your way!
Happy New Year and I hope that 2010 is exactly what you want it to be!

Contest Winners!!!

Hey All--

Thanks for the great books you recommended yesterday. I know giving only one favorite for the year was tough. I didn't get to read near as much this year as I like, and it was difficult for me. Knowing how much several of you read through the year, it was most likely torturous! Sorry!

Good news, though. I found a few extra of my books I'd forgotten I had, so instead of choosing five winners, I'm choosing eight! Here are the winners of one of my books from the first LCR trilogy:

TERRY
STORYLADY (SHARON SCHAFER)
CONNIE
MODOKKER (LISA)
ERIN T
ROBINKY42
TERRI
ALEXANDRA

Congratulations, winners! Please email me at christy@christyreece.com. I need your mailing information and the name of the book, RESCUE ME, RETURN TO ME or RUN TO ME that you'd like to have.

Thanks to everyone who entered. Stay tuned for more giveaways in the new year!

Tomorrow, I'm going to post a combined list of all the great recommendations we've received over the last couple of weeks. Jackie P. was so sweet to put these together for us. Thank you, Jackie!!! You're awesome!

Okay, off to get to know some new characters I just met. They're trying to tell me their story and I need to listen to them.

Hope everyone has a fabulous Wednesday!

End of the Year Best Book

Have you noticed all the lists this year of best books? Top ten, top one hundred, top ten in--you name the genre. I'm not sure if this is done every year and for some reason I never paid attention until this year, or if this is a new thing. Whatever the reason, it seems everyone from magazines to newspapers to blogs are naming top books.

Well, I want to be a little different but not! I want to talk about your favorite book of the year. Yes, just one this time! I know that's difficult. Reading hundreds in a year can cause you to forget many that you really enjoyed. However, there's always that ONE. You know the one that moves you so much, it stays with you for days, weeks or even forever. It's one you talk to your friends about or find yourself pondering on while you're sitting at a red light. The one you'd recommend to anyone and everyone because it had that much of an impact on you. Last year I read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers for the very first time. That book made a significant impression on me. I thought about it for months after I read it and at Christmas time, I bought a copy for several family members. It was one of the sweetest and most profound love stories and romances I've ever read.

This year, in a different way, I read, enjoyed and savored a book by Pamela Clare called Unlawful Contact. Quite a different book from Redeeming Love but still a wonderful love story, a sigh worthy hero and a feisty heroine. I loved it and recommend it often.

So here's your challenge. What was THAT book for you this year? Neither publication date nor genre matters. But it must be one you read this year. And just so you won't feel pressured or obligated, all of my books are exempt.

I'm giving away a signed copy from my first trilogy to five random commenters. Once I select the winners, I'll announce them and then they can tell me which book they'd like to have.

So, tell me, what was THAT book for you this year?

Monday's Musings

Hi All-

Hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas. Mine was fantabulous! Family, food and lots of football talk. Since my team, Alabama, will be playing in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship, every other conversation was geared toward the upcoming game. I come from a long line of Crimson Tide fans, but two family members, my nephew and my husband root for other teams. That always makes for more interesting and lively conversations!

So lets talk about books! Did you read some good ones last week? If so, what were they?

I didn't get a CHANCE to read very much this last week. Waiting till the last minute to do shopping, wrapping and baking doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else. However, that didn't keep me from once again buying more books! Here's what I purchased last week:

Untraceable by Laura Griffin
A Dark Love by Margaret Carroll
Captive of Sin by Anna Campbell

I've heard excellent things about these books and really look forward to digging into them.

So what you? And if you're like me and didn't get a CHANCE to read, did you get or give any books for gifts? If so, what were they?

Stay tuned, because tomorrow, I want to discuss favorite books of the year. And I'll be giving away signed copies of my books, so if you know of anyone who'd like to win one, please be sure to tell them to stop by tomorrow and comment. Five people will win a copy of their book of choice.

Okay, let's get started on today's topic. What were your good reads from last week?

And isn't it odd that the blogger not only capitalizes CHANCE, it has also started putting it in bold letters. So strange. (:

Season's Greetings!

Hi Everyone--

Recently I was asked by Barnes and Noble for an original essay on why I write romance. If you'd like to read the essay, you can go to this link:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/No-Chance/Christy-Reece/e/9780345517784/

Click on Features.

Hope you enjoy!

I'm in the midst of wrapping presents and baking goodies, but wanted to stop and tell you how very much I've enjoyed my first year as a published author and it's all because of YOU! Getting to know you has been a true pleasure. And I so appreciate the kindness you've shown me as well as the enthusiastic reception you've given to the stories of the Last Chance Rescue organization. 2010 and 2011 will give you even more insight into the lives, loves and rescues of LCR employees. I hope you enjoy them all!

In this season of love and giving, I wish for you health, peace and happiness. May all your dreams come true!

Merry Christmas!

Christy

Favorite Reads

Hi Everyone-

Hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was definitely full and fun with shopping, eating out and a baby shower. Still have shopping to do this week but really hope to be finished by Wednesday. Didn't get a CHANCE to read very much this past week, but that didn't stop me from buying a few.

Here's what I purchased in the last week:

The Surgeon's Lady by Carla Kelly. I've heard wonderful things about this book and look forward to reading it.
Waking the Dead by Kylie Brant. This is the third in her Mindhunters series. I have the other two and have heard great things about them. They're all on my TBR stack.
Royal's Bride by Kat Martin. Love Kat Martin!
Daring Time by Beth Kerry. Have heard great things about Beth Kerry and look forward to reading her. Thanks, Mary! (:
Dark Slayer by Christine Feehan. I found this on sale at Barnes and Noble for 50% off. What a deal! Love the Dark series!

Let's talk about what you've loved this past week. The only rule here is that we're looking for recommendations and good stuff only. What good books did you get a CHANCE to read last week and what do you hope to get a CHANCE to read this week?

And yes, I've noticed how this blogger capitalizes the word CHANCE. So odd, don't you think? (:

Okay, let's chat!

The books aren't written, but I plan to write about three characters that you'll meet in the 2010 trilogy. I started one yesterday and am already loving it!

Couldn't wait to tell you guys. Hope everyone is having a terrific day!

Hey Everybody--

Thank you again for the wonderful comments this past week. It's been so much fun and I think we all know each other a bit better, along with our favorite kinds of reads. Looks like we all have a lot in common. The recommendations I've received will keep me in books well into 2011!

And oh by the way, check out the changes to my website with the new covers. What do you think?

As I mentioned on my post yesterday, I'll start posting the first of the week with a sort of Monday quarterback kind of post. We can talk about books you've enjoyed the week before and get even more recommendations. I don't do a lot of reading while I'm writing, but when I do take a break, it'll be great to know exactly what I need to buy.

Okay, on to the reason you came back to visit me so soon. Grand Prize includes:

A signed copy of the first Last Chance Rescue Trilogy (RESCUE ME, RETURN TO ME and RUN TO ME)
$25 gift card to Barnes and Noble
$25 gift card to Books A Million
Bath and Body Works gift set

Signed copy of NO CHANCE

And the winner is: cmac

(2) Consolation prizes:

$25 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a signed copy of RUN TO ME

Winners of the consolation prizes: Sarah and CrystalGB

CMAC, Sarah and CrystalGB, please email me at christy@christyreece.com with your mailing information.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks again to all who commented. I'll have contests at least once a month beginning next year, so please be sure to come by often.

Until next Monday, stay safe if you're out shopping and remember that books make wonderful gifts!

Monday's Contest Question

Hi All--

Hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. I've had so much fun this past week. Sharing favorite reads and getting author recommendations has turned my TBR list into its own book!

Tuesday, I'll draw names from all the commenters over the last week. Winners will be announced at 1:00 PM CST. So be sure to check in tomorrow!

Now, for today's question, I wanted to do something a bit different. Let's talk about favorite hooks and themes. Hooks are those story concepts that make you buy a book. Such as: secret baby, marriage of convenience, cowboys, woman in jeopardy, etc. There are a multitude of hooks out there and we all have our favorites.

And themes, meaning an underlying thread that carries through the entire story. For instance, my books are about damaged people who have a strong desire to rescue others. Each individual has his or her own reason and it almost always relates back to their past. In RESCUE ME, for instance, no one was around to rescue Devon when she needed them most. As Eden, she has devoted her life to rescuing others.

In my upcoming Last Chance Rescue trilogy, each story has a theme:

NO CHANCE: Reunited Lovers
SECOND CHANCE: Redemption
LAST CHANCE: Survival

Rescuing those in jeopardy is the hook.

So what are your favorite hooks and themes? And what are your favorite books with those hooks? Without knowing the author's name or previous work, what hook on the back cover makes you buy that book?

For me, I love the the revenge hook. Hero and heroine meet due to one or the other taking revenge for some real or perceived wrong. One of my favorite books with that hook is Julie Garwood's wonderful historical romance, Honor's Splendor. The hero kidnaps the heroine in revenge against the heroine's brother. But things are not as they seem, as the hero soon discovers. In revenge plots, there's such a great opportunity for enlightenment.

Two others I love are Kat Martin's Devil's Prize (hero has total misconception about heroine) and Sweet Vengeance (heroine has total misconception about hero). I love how the hero and heroine fight against their feelings of love while trying to hold on to their hatred. Fortunately love always wins. Which is why I read romance!

Okay, your turn, what are your favorites?

Sunday's Contest Question

Hi All--

Hope you're having a nice, relaxing Sunday and you're staying warm and dry.

Thanks for the great discussion yesterday. Interesting to see the many varied comments and recommendations. My TBR list has grown considerably since I started this contest. Guess I'd better start being nicer, so Santa will bring me some bookstore gift cards.

Since we talked about tearjerkers yesterday, I thought it'd be fun to discuss the opposite:

WHAT ROMANCE BOOKS HAVE MADE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD?

I don't read a lot of romantic comedy. I've read some and have enjoyed them, but I'm usually looking for that emotional tug on my heartstrings when I'm wanting a good read. However, I have read a few romances, not necessarily romantic comedy, that I've chuckled or had to stop and give a good old belly laugh. (Belly laugh might be a Southernism, not sure).

Here are the ones I can remember laughing out loud while reading:

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series--so funny I've been almost hysterical with laughter
The Bride by Julie Garwood
The Secret by July Garwood
Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught--this was one I mentioned yesterday that made me cry, but there are several humorous moments. One that comes to mind is the sewing scene. Takes amazing talent to be able to stir so many emotions in one book. Judith McNaught is a master of this.
It Had To Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips--The scene at her father's funeral with her dog is hilarious. SEP is another author who has the phenomenal talent of making you laugh one moment and tear up the next.

Again, one comment, per person, per day and you'll be eligible for Tuesday's grand prize drawing.

No limit on the list. Let's just talk funny! What are yours?

Saturday's Contest Question

Good Saturday All!

Yesterday was so much fun. Thanks for all the great recommendations!

Today let's talk about tear jerker romances. Without a happy ending, it's not a romance to me, however, I do love strong emotions in a book. Stories and characters that seem so real, you literally feel as though you're going through the anguish with them. I love stories where characters go through some sort of trauma or grave event that challenges them and I so enjoy celebrating with them when they overcome, realizing they're stronger than they thought they were. I don't mind they have to work for that happy ever after as long as there will be one. My characters tend to do that from time to time in my own books. I love to read them and write them too.

So, here's the challenge:

NAME FIVE ROMANCES THAT HAVE MADE YOU CRY.

Remember, there must be a happy ending but along the way, there were tears for you and the characters.

Let's see how many different ones we come up. Here are mine:

CRY NO MORE by Linda Howard
REDEEMING LOVE by Francine Rivers
DARK WATERS by Sharon Sala
SARAH'S CHILD by Linda Howard
LETTERS TO KELLEY by Suzanne Brockmann

The top three had me closing the book several times and just sobbing.

As a reminder, one post, per person, per day and you'll get your name in Tuesday's grand prize drawing.

So let's have some fun today and talk about crying!

What's on your list?

Friday's Contest Question

Hi Everyone-

Yesterday was a lot of fun and yet more books have been added to my TBR pile. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Since we talked about favorite rereads yesterday, let's talk today about favorite authors.

WHAT TOP THREE AUTHORS DO YOU HAVE TO BUY ON OR ABOUT THE DAY OF THEIR BOOK RELEASE?

Same rules apply. One answer, per person, per day will get your name in for the grand prize drawing. However, feel free to post as many times as you like. I love talking about my favorite topics with you guys.

To start us off, here's my list. Must add a caveat that I have about twenty or so authors I must have, but I'll just say three for time's sake.

LINDA HOWARD
JUDITH MCNAUGHT
KAREN ROSE (Can't believe I didn't mention her yesterday. LOVE her!)

Okay, your turn!

Third Day Contest Question

Hi All--

Thanks so much for all the responses yesterday. Sorry I didn't get to respond to all of them. Went running around with hubby and didn't get back until late. Will try to catch all your answers today.

Also, I'm adding an additional prize to the grand prize:

$25 gift card to Books A Million!

New question:

WHAT ROMANCE BOOK HAVE YOU READ MORE THAN ONCE?

Same rules as before, one entry, per person, per day.

I'll get us started. I have about ten that I reread over and over again, usually every year. The one that comes to mind right now is McKenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard. One of my all time favorite books by one of my all time favorite authors.

How about you?

Second Day of Getting to Know You Contest

Hi Everyone--

Thanks for all the responses yesterday! Looks like many of us started reading romance at an early age, while a few found it a little later. Whenever you found it though, aren't you glad you did? I know I am.

Here's the second day question and rules are the same. One entry, per person, per day. Your name will go in the grand prize drawing to be made Tuesday, December 15.

Today's question:

NAME THE TITLE AND AUTHOR OF THE ROMANCE YOU ARE READING NOW OR WHAT WAS THE LAST ROMANCE YOU READ?

Hope to hear some great recommendations from everyone. To get us started, the romance I'm reading now is Hard To Hold by Stephanie Tyler. Loving it!

Your turn!

A Getting to Know You Contest

Hi Everyone!

Tis the season for giving. In that spirit, I wanted to do something special and fun for you.

I've heard from so many wonderful people this year and would love to know more about you. No big family secrets, I promise! However, I'd love to know a little about your reading habits and the things you like and want to read.

So here's the contest:

Each day I will post a question about reading and books. When you answer the question, I'll add your name to the 'hat'. On Tuesday, January 15, I will draw from the names accumulated. There will be one grand prize and two consolation prizes.

Grand prize gift includes the following:

A signed copy of the entire Last Chance Rescue Trilogy (RESCUE ME, RETURN TO ME and RUN TO ME)
$25 gift card to Barnes and Noble
Bath and Body Works gift set
Signed cover flats for the new trilogy (NO CHANCE, SECOND CHANCE and LAST CHANCE)
Advanced reading copy of NO CHANCE

Consolation prizes aren't bad either:

$25 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a signed copy of RUN TO ME

Only one entry per person per day, but try to answer each day since it increases your chances to win. And best of all, there is no right or wrong answer!

Today's question:

What was the first romance you read or can remember reading?

Post here, with the title and author of the book, along with your name so I can put it in the 'hat'.

Since this is the first time I've done this kind of contest, please let me know if you have any questions. And to get us started, and no, I won't include my name in the 'hat', but the first romance I can remember reading is The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss. From that moment on, I was hooked!

What about you?

Mid-Week Update

Hi Everyone!

Hope your December has started off just the way you wanted. As for me, I'm still chugging toward the finish line. I wrapped up and sent off the page proofs for SECOND CHANCE. Yay! Revisions are done on LAST CHANCE but I'm still polishing and fixing things here and there. I hope to get everything done by Friday, so I can have a few days downtime. I've put off so many things over the last few months that my To Do list is beginning to look like a book of its own!

I wanted to remind everyone that if you're in the Birmingham, Alabama area this weekend, I'm signing books at two different Books A Million stores. Joining me will be the awesome authors Jennifer Echols, Debra Webb, and Peggy Webb. The times and locations are below. Would love to see you there!

Saturday, December 5

Thanks to everyone for your encouraging emails and messages on Facebook. It's exciting to know that you're looking forward to the new books. I so appreciate you going on this writing journey with me. I hope we can continue for a while yet.

Next week, I plan to start a contest which will include several nice prizes. It's still squishy in my mind, so can't tell you much other than I think you'll like it! Check back on Monday or Tuesday of next week and I should have more details.

And I promise, promise, promise, the excerpt for LAST CHANCE is coming. I hope you love McKenna and Lucas as much as I do!

Until next time, wishing you bright days and even brighter smiles!
